Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a "V"-notch integral to the topstrap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth walnut. The serial number is hand-written on the inside of each panel in pencil. The left panel has a boxed "GP" cartouche. The grips show even light wear with scattered light nicks and scratches. There are a few more notable nicks on the bottom faces of the panels. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine condition as Antique.

Type of Finish: Blue & Brass Trigger Guard

Finish Originality: Original, numbers match.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion and a little stubborn fouling in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8+/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 30% of its metal finish. There is fairly evenly scattered wear with stronger finish in protected areas or around raised features. The most notable wear is in the cylinder and grip areas. Most worn areas have gone to a light patina or show minor surface oxidation. There are scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Very Good-plus condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington New Model Army was the final and most refined percussion revolver Remington produced during the Civil War. Known for its solid frame and durability, it was favored by many Union troops over the more fragile open-top Colt revolvers. Remington produced around 122,000 of these New Model Army revolvers for government contracts between 1863 and 1865.

This example, bearing serial number 119901, has matching numbers with martial inspection and acceptance marks indicating it saw service during the Civil War. The “GP” cartouche on the grip stands for Giles Porter, a U.S. government inspector who oversaw Remington revolvers from 1862 to 1875. There are also "W", “C”, “S”, "J" and "G" inspector marks on the barrel, frame, cylinder and trigger guard.

Mechanically sound, this revolver remains completely functional, with tight cylinder lockup and crisp hammer operation. The wood grips are well-preserved, showing no chips or cracks and displaying an attractive aged character. Over 30% of the original bluing remains, gracefully blended with a smooth, even patina that speaks to the revolver’s age and authenticity. Finding a genuine Civil War-era Remington New Model Army in this condition—with inspector marks, military serial range, original finish, and operational mechanics—is exceedingly rare.
