British RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes dueled German Me-109s to a standstill in the epic Battle of Britain in the summer and fall of 1940, validating Churchill's famous claim that it would be their "finest hour”. Of the 2,962 Allied pilots who flew in the Battle of Britain, 117 of them were Canadian, with an entire RCAF squadron flying against the Luftwaffe in deadly, daily dogfights over the English countryside in what came to be known as “Spitfire summer”. Those intrepid Canadian RCAF pilots were issued their own version of the classic “Type B” leather flight helmet, distinguished from the British version by the lack of oxygen mask attaching snaps at front. This Canadian RCAF WW2 Battle of Britain Pilot Type B Leather Flight Helmet is in very good condition, with moderate fraying to the wiring above the end plug, and with some scattered scratching, darkening, and age wear evident. Otherwise, the helmet is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough brown leather construction. Most interestingly, it boasts the classic metal zippered brown leather ear cups housing the original ear phones, sports the original wiring with end plug, and features the original brown leather chinstrap with a fully functional darkened brass buckle closure. It bears a soft chamois lining, and is a fine example of a very rare, original Canadian RCAF WW2 Battle of Britain Pilot Type B Leather Flight Helmet. Also included is a pair of post-war English made motorcycle goggles that approximate those worn by Commonwealth fliers during the war, and will be fine for display.
