Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / -WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-”, “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-”, and “- MODEL 94 – 30 W.C.F.-“. The top of the barrel at the receiver and the receiver are marked with a circled “WP” proof. The underside of the receiver is marked “1405084”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a hooded, textured, ramped base fixed to the barrel in front of the forward barrel band. The rear sight is a “U”-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2-piece walnut with a banded forend, a smooth straight grip and a checkered steel buttplate. The stocks have some scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. There are a series of notches on the left side of the forend along the edge. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There is some corrosion on the heel. The checkering is generally sharp. Overall, the stocks are in Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its current finish. The balance of the finish shows mild operational and handling wear. There is thinning on the leading edges. There is intermittent oxidation. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety and the lever safety is operational. The action locks-up solidly. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with Winchester Model 94 factory box. (The serial number on the box label has worn away.)

Our Assessment: This is a Pre-64 Winchester Model 1894 Carbine made in the early 1940s with a 20” round barrel chambered in .30-30 Win. The 30-30 Win. has likely taken more deer in America than any other cartridge except maybe .30-06 and the model 1894, or simply 94 as it is now known, is one of the most popular rifles ever chambered for the round. This example is in Good condition with about 70% of its finish, a good bore and strong mechanics. This is an honest rifle that has seen 80 years of use, but is still perfect for throwing in the back window of your pick-up truck for use on coyotes and other varmints and it would also be a good deer rifle today. Being a pre-1964 example, it may also interest the Winchester collectors.
