The expiration of Smith & Wesson’s patent on the bored-through cylinder in 1869 led Colt to design the revolutionary M-1873 Single Action Army, which soon earned the moniker the “Peacemaker”, “Equalizer”, and “gun that won the West”. Carried by soldiers, lawmen, ranchers, rustlers, cowboys, and outlaws alike, the Colt SAA quickly became synonymous with the untamed wilds of the American West. This Antique Early 1900s Merwin & Bray Colt 4.75" SAA Revolver Leather Pistol Holster & .38 Money Belt Rig is in Fair Condition, with some modern white re-stitching along the upper right side seam of the holster, most of the front stitching missing from the holster, including at the toe which now remains open, moderate drying and surface cracking along the left side of the holster, heavy seam tearing and modern black stitch repairing to the belt, a tear and glue repair to the bottom front left edge of the belt, and with moderate overall drying, darkening, fragility, and age wear evident. Most interestingly, the holster is crafted of tough, rigid, yet fairly supple brown leather in the classic “Mexican double loop” design, with a folded over skirt that also acts as the belt slide, bears the faded but present intertwined monogram “MB & Co” maker’s mark of the famous Merwin & Bray stamped at the upper front, and measures 4” wide across the top opening, and 8” long down the straight side, making it ideal for a Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army revolver with a 4.75” barrel. Merwin & Bray of Worcester, Mass. was famous for producing high quality gun leather in the late 19th, early 20th century. The belt is constructed of soft, supple brown leather, unmarked as to its maker, though undoubtedly also dates to the late 19th, early 20th century, and is a scarce “money” belt, with slit openings at each side of the front end to stow specie. It sports 36 sewn leather shell loops for .38 ammo along the back, bears a fully functional metal front buckle closure, and is stamped with the numbers “22” and “32 / 20” on the leather front closure strap, though measures 38 1/2” long overall x 2 1/2” wide.
